[Well, that certainly explains why 9S had thought it was a good idea to ask him if he believed in God.

To ask him if he loved his mother and father.

And worse yet, perhaps, he is starting to get the idea that this person that 9S cares for so deeply is the same woman who he loves so much.]

You are too kind to me, as always, Lucrezia. I think that I understand what he was trying to say.

But my family is - [How does he even begin to explain this to her?] - a very sensitive subject.

[pontificus]

You may not believe it, but I understand more than you know. [Her family may be in the public eye, and she knows what they say about her and Cesare, but there is much that many do not know. It may be different, much different, but family is still a very sensitive topic. Even the mention of Juan can have a visceral reaction.]

I am sure even you may have heard my name as the scandal of Italy. I did further try and explain that we all view love differently, that such a subject can be very sore for others.

It pains me to think I have cause you any heartache.

[If only you were aware of just how very well he knows your family, Lucrezia. And perhaps now would be the only proper time and place to speak of it.

But he doesn't, because doing so would only cause her heartache and that is the very last thing that he wants.]

I have caused my own heartache. First with Caterina and now with this.

[He realizes that the two families dislike each other greatly, but at the moment he dislikes her enough that he doesn't care.]

You are far more than any of their opinions of you.

Caterina Sforza? [It must be the way he says that. She bristles. How could a man like Ezio ever care for such a woman? But then it makes sense. When love is cruel, she had told 9S.]

You are too good a man for the likes of her, and I do not say that, because the Sforzas mean to end my family, but instead because I was a part of theirs.

[Another pause, because speaking of Giovanni makes her clench her fists. She is not sorry for what has happened to him, and she would make use of the dagger that took his life should he come to find himself here, too.]

She did not deserve you, but whoever is fortunate to find your graces here is. And I do not know her, but I know you deserve to be loved, too-- a true love, one borne of passion and of want and wanting. It is not mere reverence. It is not just duty, or programming as I think they have called it. But because she chose you of all the men here.

[Lucrezia has no choice, not here nor in Rome. And perhaps that is where her true jealousy lies, but she manages to keep her own feelings out of her voice.]

[He says it as if he is spitting on her name, as if the very sound of it pains him. So many had told him that she would be trouble - Leonardo, so long ago when he had first had the misfortune to meet her. Machiavelli telling him to leave her to her fate, that she was not worth it.

He should have listened.]

Si. And you are too good a woman for the likes of him.

[That entire family could burn at this rate, and he would gladly light the match himself.]

Ezio had always had a choice, but he always seemed to make the wrong ones. First Christina, then Caterina, and now all of this.]

I believe it is possible that you have heard of her. From 9S.

[This entire thing is so complicated please help.]

So it is as I had thought, two men who care for the same woman. [And here she would hope for just one that would love her that deeply. She hums for a moment.]

I do not think it changes anything. We all have out duties and requirements here, but that does not mean we cannot care for more than one person. [Which is certainly hypocritical for what she has asked Cesare, but it is different. And she would argue it. She is also hoping to ease both Ezio and 9S, not thinking of her own issues.]

[For Ezio it changed nothing. He understands, well and completely, that this place did not inspire faithfulness, nor was it something he had ever found himself capable of. It did not bother him that she might go to others, that she may even love them - that she might love 9S the way she loved him.

It bothered him that those feelings may not be real, but thankfully A2 and Lucrezia had helped him see the light before he could hurt her any further.]

No, it does not. There is someone from my past who I still care for the way you speak of. And there is another here who I feel deeply for. Our hearts are capable of loving many.

[He means you, Lucrezia. He cares for you so deeply and he shouldn't.]

[She hopes he means her. She cares for him as well, the way he looks at her, touches her, and if it truly is her, the way he speaks of her.]

I have found myself deeply caring for someone here, too. [There are a few that she has affections for, she cannot deny how she feels either.]

Someone who has been kind to me without reason

[While he had been lucky enough to share the company of a few during his time within the city, there were only two who had managed to actually capture a piece of his heart.

Oh, you know his reasons, [She teases, knowing that they are speaking of one another.]

It is such a simple thing, a smile. But I feel I have not done it in such a long time.

I could make a guess. [He likes that about her, about them. How easily this comes.]

Then he should make sure it happens more often.

[The next time Lucrezia enters her room after this conversation she'll find a single red lily laying on her windowsill, along with a handwritten note that simply says: To make you smile.]
